FunTreks Off Road Jeep trail guide Books

Mirror/Strawberry Lakes Trail, California

These two trails are located in the Red Mountain Lakes Area, which consists of five lakes: Mirror Lake, West Lake, Strawberry Lake, Red Lake and Coyote Lake. You’ll pass West Lake on the way to Strawberry Lake and Red Lake on the way to Coyote Lake (available as separate eGuide from FunTreks). All of the trails are difficult. A careful driver in a high-clearance SUV can probably make the short trip to West Lake but all other trails need a modified vehicle. If you park at the start and hike in, West Lake is the shortest hike followed by Mirror Lake. All lakes have camping spots, some with fire rings and crude picnic tables.

Difficult TrailRating
Difficult. The trail to Mirror Lake has one section that will likely require winching. A 150-yard hill is very steep with large boulders that move around as you climb. Tight trees add to the likelihood of vehicle damage. Most people look at the hill and decide that nearby Strawberry Lake is a better alternative. Strawberry Lake has large boulders, too, but the trail is much flatter.
