FunTreks FAQs

General Questions

How do you gather your trail information?

We drive all of the trails first hand! We know you don’t feel sorry for us. We absolutely love what we do and we savor every beautiful or rainy day on the trails. We put a lot of hard work into making sure our information is accurate and reliable so we can publish the most important details in our guidebooks.

Do you offer guided trips?

Unfortunately, not at this time. We field a lot of calls from people who would love to use our trail experience in real time but our goal is to give you the tools (our books, data cards and apps) to experience a self-guided tour of your own on the trails we love. But don’t be intimidated! Visit our Resource Page for everything you need to know before you hit the trail.

Why don’t you have every trail in your books?

There are hundreds of trails out there and they’re not all winners. We try to filter out the bad ones, which helps us guarantee you’ll have fun. We do miss a good one every now and then, so please let us know when we do.

How do you rate the trails?

We start with basic EASY, MODERATE and DIFFICULT ratings, and then give a detailed description based on actually driving the trail. When in doubt about a rating, we tend to err on the harder side. Remember, too, trail conditions can change quickly; it may have been different when we drove it.

What’s the difference between the ATV Trails Guide and the Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive books?

Our 4-Wheel-Drive guides give you trail options for all vehicle types but difficulty ratings apply to larger vehicles like SUVs and 4x4s and the trails cover a larger area. Our ATV guides are vehicle specific, meaning that we drove ATVs not 4x4s, allowing us to rate trails differently and make loops for unlicensed vehicles when available. The ATV guides will focus more on a specific area high lighting a bunch of trails in close proximity. Trails do overlap between the different books so give us a call if you can’t decide.

How often are your books updated?

There is no set time, really. It just depends on how quickly things change out there. Between editions, we try to put updates on our website. We are hoping this new site will give us faster feedback which will be available immediately.

Do I need to replace my current edition with the newest one?

Please do. Trails close, new ones open, trails get altered and impacted by weather and regular use, sometimes changing the entire terrain. Our goal is to guide you on exciting and updated adventures with every book, so stay up to date so you can enjoy the ride!

How do I find a trail on your website?

The quickest way to find a trail is to type the name of the trail into the search box on the home page. Type as few letters as possible that are unique to that trail. For example, if you type in “Stillwater Pass Road,” nothing will come up because the trail on the website is named “Stillwater Pass.” You only need to type “Stillwater.” All you need for “North Divide 717 OHV Area” is “717,” and so on. On the next page, scroll down below the map and click on the trail you want. When you get to the detailed trail page, scroll down to TRAIL UPDATES. (If this heading does not appear in the left column, there is no update.)

Why doesn’t the Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails cover the entire state?

We get it, the title of that book can be misleading, so thanks for asking the question. The Guide to Colorado Backroads was our very first book released and it covers all the trails SOUTH of Interstate 70. We released our Northern Guide later and it covers all the trails NORTH of Interstate 70. We know what you’re thinking, “Why not just change the name to Southern Colorado?” Bare with us. Since this book is on it’s third edition it now has a familiar title that is recognizable and we would hate to confuse the situation…even more.

Will you ever release guides for more states?

There are great trails in so many states and we would love to say that we are close to our goal of mapping more of them, but we never want to compromise the integrity of our current books to gain more titles. Our small staff has a hard time keeping up with over 600 trails as it is.  We want to make sure you have the most up-to-date information when you’re out on the trail. That is our priority right now. But don’t worry; we hear you Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico and others.

Is there still a Northern and Southern Version of the California Book?

Nope. In 2014 we released a combined Northern and Southern California book. Why? We discovered that quite a few trails in both areas had been closed, making the two books a lot less comprehensive. In our current edition, you will find 100 of the best trails to ride in the entire state.

How do I download waypoints for a trail or book?

On each individual trail page, you will find that you can download waypoints and the tracklog. Trails are in universal “.GPX” format which works in almost all applications.

Data Card FAQ

What is the Difference between your Data card and your Apple App?

The Data card is a micro SD card created to work with GPS devices and there is a Data card for each book. The Apple App which you buy in the App Store on your Apple device gives you access to all of our 600+ trails.

What is the difference between the free Waypoints and the Data Card?

Free waypoints match the guidebooks waypoints and are only the designated waypoints from the trails. A Data card includes breadcrumb/tracklogs allowing your GPS device to show the entire trail as a line making it easier to follow along. With the Data card, you now know exactly where you are on a trail at all times. The data card also is plug-n-play with most Garmin devices, meaning that you can search for trails and in some cases receive turn-by-turn directions to the start of the trail.

How do I use the Data card?

Visit our Resource Page for complete step by step instructions.

Will the Data card work in my Jeep in-dash unit?

No, it will not at this time. Sorry about that. Our geeks are busy trying to crack the Jeep NAV systems so hang in there.

Do I still need the book if I have the Data card?

Absolutely, yes. Our Data card will give you a breadcrumb trail to follow on your GPS device and our Waypoints will pop up on the screen as you go, but it will not give you all of the very detailed and important information we have in our books. Our books have comprehensive track logs that tell you what to expect at each Waypoint as well as the trail rating, contact info for current conditions and other info you don’t want to be without.

Do I need a cell signal to use the App on the trail?

No. Once you’ve downloaded the map using a WiFi connection your phone will use its GPS capabilities and you will not need a cell signal. One thing to be aware of is that some iPads or tablets are not GPS capable so make sure your device is prior to purchasing the App.

Do I still need the book if I have the App?

Absolutely, yes. Our app will give you a breadcrumb trail to follow while you’re on the trail and our Waypoints will pop up on the screen as you go, but it will not give you all of the very detailed and important information we have in our books.
